Every skin has
a story.
Every plan at TLC Skyn starts with the person, not the procedure.
Book a consultationThere’s a certain kind of dark spot that just won’t budge no matter what you rub on it. You’ve tried the vitamin C serum, maybe a niacinamide cream someone recommended, and the spot is still sitting there, stubborn as ever. That’s usually a sign the pigment has settled too deep for a cream to reach. Laser is built for exactly this problem.
At TLC Skyn, Pigmented Lesion Laser Removal is one of our more requested treatments, and for good reason – it goes straight to the source instead of working around it.
So what counts as a “pigmented lesion”?
Basically, it’s any spot where your skin has produced more melanin than the area around it. Sun spots on the cheeks, a freckle that’s darkened with age, those brownish patches that show up on the back of the hands after years in the sun – all of it falls under this umbrella. Some of these you’re born with. Most, though, are the slow result of sun exposure adding up over decades, sometimes with a hormonal nudge along the way.
A quick clarification, because people often ask: this isn’t the same thing as pigmentation in the broader sense, and it isn’t melasma either. Those tend to spread across larger areas and usually respond better to a mix of treatments over time. Laser for pigmented lesions works best when the mark is small and well-defined – something you could circle with a pen if you had to.
What the laser is actually doing
The device sends a beam of light tuned to a wavelength that melanin absorbs strongly. When it hits the lesion, the pigment heats up and breaks apart into much smaller particles. From there, your body takes over – the lymphatic system carries the fragments away over the next few weeks, and the spot gradually fades on its own.
Because the laser is calibrated to react with pigment specifically, the skin surrounding the lesion is left more or less alone. You’re not treating a whole area to fix one spot.
On the pain question – most people say it feels like a light snap against the skin, similar to a rubber band. Over quickly. If you’re nervous about it or the area is sensitive, we can apply a numbing cream beforehand.
Walking into your appointment
We don’t just point a laser at a dark spot and go. Every session starts with Dr. Swathy or one of the dermatologists actually looking at what you’re dealing with. Some marks that look like ordinary sun spots turn out to be something else entirely, and it matters to catch that early. If a mole with an odd shape or border comes up during the check, that gets handled separately – we’d talk you through mole excision as an option instead.
Once we’re clear on what we’re treating, the process itself is short. Fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on how many spots you’re getting done and how large they are. You’ll wear protective eyewear during the session, and that’s about the extent of the prep. No recovery time built into your week – most people go back to their day right after.
The days and weeks after
Immediately after treatment, the area usually looks a shade darker than before, sometimes with a mild sunburn-like feeling. That’s expected and it settles within a day or two. Over the following one to three weeks, the treated pigment starts to flake or fade as new skin comes through underneath. Most people can see a real difference by the one-month mark.
We’ll go over aftercare with you before you leave – nothing complicated, mostly sunscreen every single day, being gentle with the area, and resisting the urge to pick at it while it’s healing. Sun exposure is the one thing we really push back on here. Going out unprotected in those first few weeks can undo the treatment or even bring on fresh pigment, so it’s not something to skip.
Does it actually work better than creams?
For this kind of spot, yes, and the difference shows up fast. Where a lightening cream might take three or four months to make a dent, laser can visibly change a lesion in one or two sessions. There’s no cutting involved, no real downtime, and the results are usually there to see within weeks rather than a season.
It’s not one-size-fits-all, though. How your skin responds depends on your skin type, how long the lesion has been there, and how deep it sits. Some spots clear out completely after a single visit. Others, particularly the older or more stubborn ones, need a second round to fully even out.
Worth a consultation if…
You’ve got sun spots or age spots on your face, hands, back, or shoulders that bother you more than you’d like to admit. It’s also something people often pair with a chemical peel for a more even overall tone, or bring up alongside other concerns like tan removal or dark circles during the same visit.
We won’t push you toward laser if something simpler will do the job just as well – that decision gets made after we’ve actually looked at your skin, not before. Get in touch and we’ll set up a time to take a proper look.
